Fluid Motion

In May 2016, as part of MAT/SBCAST First Thursdays, Fluid Motion, was a transdisciplinary performance by David Gordon combining live painting, video and sound. Similar to Japanese suminagashi ink painting, the paintings harness fluid dynamics to create complex marbling patterns. By placing small amounts of fluid acrylic paint on a wet canvas, flat against the ground; then slightly tilting the canvas back and forth, complex patterns emerge, often evoking aerial landscapes, astronomical photos or microscopic processes. Custom sonification software will generate electronic sounds based on the color, shape and level of agitation of the paint surface.
